JP/Politiken Media Group acquires Altinget and Mandag Morgen
With the acquisition of Altinget and Mandag Morgen, JP/Politiken Media Group invests in a strong media and knowledge house with activities in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Under the new ownership, the media titles will retain their editorial independence and their high ambitions to strengthen and develop political journalism.
Altinget’s founder and owner, Rasmus Nielsen, has over the past 25 years developed Altinget into a unique democratic and journalistic success. Particularly in the Danish political landscape, but also with establishments in Sweden and Norway. With the agreement to sell his life’s work, all of Altinget’s activities in Scandinavia, as well as the media and think tank Mandag Morgen, will now become part of JP/Politiken Media Group.
“The sale comes after long and careful consideration. I have personally chosen who I want to sell to. The most important thing for me has been that Altinget and Mandag Morgen will be continued by a Danish owner as independent titles with full editorial independence. This way, every political interest in Scandinavia will continue to be heard,” says Rasmus Nielsen.
He emphasizes that Altinget and Mandag Morgen will now become part of a publishing house with strong digital development resources and a solid financial foundation.
“Over the past 25 years, we have built clear positions based on credible and relevant content for a demanding audience. We have created 200 jobs in a time when other media companies are severely challenged. I am convinced that there is an even greater potential in the concept we developed back in 2000 - and that it can be realized with a solid, publishing owner like JP/Politiken Media Group,” says Rasmus Nielsen.
CEO of JP/Politiken Media Group Stig Ørskov says about the acquisition:
“Rasmus Nielsen, together with a strong team of skilled employees, has developed Altinget and Mandag Morgen into an extraordinary journalistic success, which today holds a completely unique position in the media market. In an impressive way, they have managed to build a wide range of sharply focused niche media that reach important target groups—groups you can only reach with serious journalism. We are proud to have been chosen as the right owner to carry on the legacy.”
JP/Politiken Media Group already owns Monitormedier and Watch Medier, which operate niche media in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
Today, Altinget consists of 50 niche media in the three Scandinavian countries with offices centrally located near the parliaments and in Brussels. In addition, there is a network and course business, as well as the media Mandag Morgen and the think tank Mandag Morgen.
In the future, Rasmus Nielsen will devote himself to his two main interests: democracy and art. He plans to establish a foundation for this purpose with its own headquarters.
The purchase agreement, signed yesterday, is subject to approval by the Danish competition authorities before it is final.
